Instructions for Breast Augmentation
BREAST AUGMENTATION AFTERCARE
Having surgery is very exciting and we are here to help make process smooth, safe, and comfortable. After surgery, it is important to take care of your implants and you. Postoperative instructions will be reviewed by Dr. Afifi and her staff. Please ask us any questions!
BEFORE SURGERY: Review our Preparing for Surgery instructions as well as Medications to Avoid 2 weeks before your surgery. Also, for implants placed under the muscle, avoid pectoral muscle exercises so that there is less pain after surgery (your muscle will keep trying to contract but the implant placement is stretching it slightly).
Bra: Usually a front closure sports bra for a month, followed by a regular bra. Sports bras are often worn at night. These are sold by office for your convenience.
Band: After surgery if a breast band is necessary per Dr. Afifi, it is placed either above or below your breast. Please ask Dr. Afifi about how to wear and duration if this is used
Massage: The Medical Assistant will show you exactly how to do massage on your breast. After the MA has shown you what to do, it is important for you to do the massage for several minutes a day (some do it when they have to go to bathroom, so they remember!), at least twice a day and starting 2 days after surgery. Massage is for life. (Decreases scar tissue)
Exercise: No exercising for the first 6 weeks. After that, you may start to do light exercise, and increase to your normal routine. While exercising wear 2 sports-bra. NO weight lifting/upper body workouts for the first 3 months. Avoid pectoral work as cleavage may worsen! Discuss this with Dr. Afifi.
Sex: For the 1st month no sexual activities until cleared by the doctor (can raise blood pressure and cause bleeding).
Tanning: It is recommended that you wait at least 3 months before you go to any tanning booth or do any sun bathing. If you do go for a long period of time into the sun, it’s recommended you wear sun block on your chest to prevent any burning. No sun exposure of scar for a year!
Postoperative appointments:
To get the best result, the minimum appointments are:
1-2 days after surgery, 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year and then 1 -2 x a year thereafter. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE AND KEEP THESE APPOINTMENTS!!!
